This is continuous operation only. If the motor is put into a current limit state with current limit set to 120% of max I nom or 2.5A, then we would lose 10 watts in the clamp diodes.
This power loss, especially under fault conditions, limits this method to lower power fans only.
The principles remain constant; however, the absolute power drops to a manageable level in the smaller fans.
As was indicated previously the duty cycle ratios are skewed also. This is due to the decay of the motor current over the large voltage used for clamps.
During the PWM OFF time the motor winding is clamped by the clamp diode, and that clamp diode provides the current decay path.
